The Department of Science and Technology (DST) has the pleasure to invite you to a special workshop entitled "South African (SA)-European Union (EU) S&T cooperation addressing societal challenges: Enhancing coordination and exploiting synergy to maximise impact".
The event will be an official side event to the sixth South Africa-EU Summit. It will take place in Pretoria at the Innovation Hub on Friday, 19 July at 9:00.
The annual South Africa-EU Summit provides an opportunity for South African and EU leaders to review at the highest level the Strategic Partnership. Discussions will also focus on opportunities to strengthen cooperation in science and technology. The ESASTAP Plus workshop is convened to contribute to and enrich these deliberations.
One of ESASTAP Plus' key objectives is to promote enhanced coordination of different South Africa-EU science and technology cooperation programmes and maximise synergy between them. The side event will accordingly focus on how such coordination and synergy could be promoted in research and innovation partnerships targeting major societal challenges. The workshop will accordingly explore commonalities and synergy between different cooperation programmes and instruments targeting societal challenges such as improving food and water security, enhancing waste management, promoting competitive low-carbon economies and leveraging the potential of the oceans in a sustainable manner. Cooperation programmes and instruments, which will be considered include:
- South African participation in the EU's Seventh Frame Work Programme (FP7) for Research and opportunities in the forthcoming Horizon 2020 Framework Programme;
- Bilateral cooperation programmes between South Africa and European countries; and
- South African national research and innovation programme open to European participation
The event will be concluded by a panel to discuss opportunities to foster greater coordination of and synergy between these various programmes and instruments.
We look forward to welcoming many of you to this side event.
